Materialism is something I have wanted to write about for a long time now, mainly because over the last year or so, I have started to realise that the amount of stuff that you own, doesn’t matter and it is not going to have an affect on your happiness what so ever because at the end of the day it is just stuff.
For some reason, this 21st century society thinks that they need the new updated phone, the in fashion pieces, the newest car etc when really, if your phone still works, you don’t need a knew one, if your clothes fit , you don’t need MORE clothes and if your car gets you from A to B do you really need that BMW that is gonna make you look cooler? Nah, you don’t.
Sometimes I do still think, ‘damn I really want that new phone’, or looking through ASOS wanting new clothes, or wanting a new car but the reality is, that there are people out there who have nothing compared to what we have in this country and we all just need to appreciate what we do have instead of keep consuming more and more. When I went to Fiji, and lived with a Fijian family, they didn’t have loads of belongings, they didn’t have massive wardrobes full of clothes, or plasma TV’s or fancy phones, they appreciated what they had and the fact that they had a roof over their head and they were healthy and really that is all that matters.
The way I have started thinking is that I would rather invest in my future (ie being educated and saving for a house), memories and travelling than keep buying stuff that is just going to clutter up my life and spending money on pointless objects that are going to make me happy for a minimum of a couple days.
I was reading an article about modern society becoming too materialistic today and the ironic thing is, the ad’s down the side were ‘Urban Outfitters 30% Home and Tech, Shop now’. Society is literally brainwashing us to keep spending and buying STUFF, because we are currently living in a society that only survives if we keep spending.
When I was younger, my parents would pretty much buy me anything I wanted. I never went without and I will be forever grateful and appreciate the fact that they never let me go without, however, the amount of stuff I have ended up with over time is just stressful and my room is so cluttered and full, and btw I am the type of person that does not like to get rid of anything. I haven’t kept everything from when I was younger but I swear to god, every single stuffed toy I have ever owned is up in my mums loft. I still even have all my Barbie and Bratz dolls because I don’t want to throw them away. I think I am an actual hoarder. BUT I am getting better, and we are starting to have a major clear out because it is all just unnecessary things that we do not need and are never going to use again.
Something that was written in the article that I read was ‘People will look at someone with a lavish lifestyle filled with expensive things and think that they are living a much more blissful life than themselves. This is a view that society embeds into our brains to the point that people spend their whole lives striving for money over happiness. And this is a major flaw with our world’. I won’t lie, I have thought this. But, I don’t know about you, I am striving for happiness.
Are you too materialistic? if so why is that and will you try and be less materialistic? Just something to think about 🙂
